Khayelitsha radio presenter Lunga Mgamle won an award at the SA Traditional Music Achievement (Satma) awards.
The host of “Ezakuth’ingoma” show on Khayelitsha’s community radio station, Zibonele FM was awarded the prize for best traditional music community radio presenter at a ceremony held at the Mbombela Stadium in Mpumalanga over the weekend.
Mgamle’s on air name is DJ Mdak’ Omnyama was among a group of 16 other radio hosts who had been nominated.
“It was a hotly contested category, I only had hope because of our listeners and artists that supported me.
“I am grateful to all who took part in the voting process. Some of the people who voted for me do not listen to the radio so much but voted because they knew me,” he said.
Zibonele’s programme manager Zweli Nokhatywa congratulated Mgamle on his win, adding that the recognition would contribute to the growth of the station.
“As Zibonele we are happy to win this award. It speaks volumes for us because it raises the station to the next level in the whole country. We are grateful to all people that supported us and the listeners who have been voting.
“We also want to thank the Satmas for always remembering us and for the recognition for our roles in the communities and for promoting the artists,” he said.
Other winners on the night included Zulu traditional singer Gatshen, whose song “Inhlupheko” won most voted song of the year, and TikTok star Zamambo Mkhize, who was awarded best traditional social media influencer.
