Johannesburg - The Elephant Sanctuary, in Hartbeespoort, provides a “halfway house” for African elephants rescued from hunting concerns, export to zoos/circuses and from overpopulation relocation programmes.
During one of the three daily programmes guests feed, walk trunk-in-hand and touch the elephants to obtain a better understanding of these pachyderms and their conservation.
There are also tours at Bush Babies – known as Monkey Sanctuary – whose exotic primates have all either been raised as pets, or bred/imported for the pet trade and have now been released into a wild forest. Guests walk on elevated walkways and view the primates in their natural environment, while being taught about them and their surroundings.
