POTATO chips and puff corn from India that was seized in Durban have been found to be counterfeit.
In a statement, Lieutenant-Colonel Simphiwe Mhlongo, the KwaZulu-Natal Hawks spokesperson, said last November border police stopped and inspected a container that was coming from India.
"They drew samples of the cargo and forwarded them to the brand attorneys. It was discovered that potato chips and puff corn to the street value of approximately R173 962.20 were not genuine," said Mhlongo.
As a result, a search warrant in terms of the Counterfeit Goods Act was obtained and executed this week.
"No arrest has been made at this stage and the investigation continues."
The KZN Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation Provincial Head, Major General (Dr) Lesetja Senona, welcomed the seizure of counterfeit goods and commended the members for the good work.
