A huge amount of illegal ammunition and a rifle were recovered during raids on properties in Sydenham in Durban and Zinkwazi on the north coast.
The eThekwini District Economic Infrastructure Task Team (EITT) members executed a search warrant on Tuesday, after receiving information that firearms and ammunition were being stored at an outbuilding in Sydenham.
"The SAPS members proceeded to Sydenham. However, the suspect managed to evade the police. The premises were searched and an AR 556 rifle was found lying on a table with 39 rifle rounds, 5 rifle magazines, 19 pistol rounds, 1 pistol magazine and the safe keys. Members seized the rifle and ammunition," said Captain Carmen Rhynes of eThekwini District Communication.
During the investigation, it was established that more ammunition was being stored at a property in Zinkwazi, where EITT later recovered more ammunition, including 2562 R5 rounds, 178 AK 47 rounds, 20 SG rounds, 45 28G rounds, 42 Buck Shot, one R5 plastic magazine and two black boxes.
A 35-year-old man was arrested and detained.
Major General Makhosazana Victoria Kheswa, eThekwini District Commissioner, commended the EITT on the arrest and recovery of illegal ammunition and rifle.
