Gullium Brandt, the founder and CEO of the Saamstaan Community Foundation, has celebrated a career-defining moment after being recognised at Momentum's prestigious Lesedi Awards 2024.
This event honours employee volunteers who dedicate their time, skills, and resources to uplift the lives of others, highlighting the profound impact that committed volunteers can make in their communities.
Hailing from Namibia, Brandt has channelled his passion for social justice into aiding landless community members in their quest for home ownership.
His selfless dedication was honoured when he scooped the much-coveted 2024 Lesedi Spirit of Volunteering Award, a remarkable accolade that underscores his commitment to serving others and is selected from top achievers across the eight award categories.
In an interview with the Saturday Star, Brandt elaborated on the responsibilities that come with his role, which involve managing the application process, ensuring the land is ready for handover, and allocating land to beneficiaries with the help of the town's local authority.
His leadership has directly contributed to the successful acquisition of 319 residential homes for community members, fostering opportunities for land ownership and enhancing a sense of security within the community.
Reflecting on his recent experience at the Lesedi Awards, Brandt shared his initial surprise at the recognition. “These awards were like a surprise to me. When I sent in my application, there were only 10 minutes left. My colleagues encouraged and helped me submit it.”
His response to receiving an invitation to the Johannesburg event, was one of astonishment, having never flown before: “And I had everything by me, and I applied. When I received an email that I had to go to Johannesburg to attend the Lesedi Awards, it was just amazing. Because I have never travelled and never flown. It was very nice. When I went there, being part of those awards was amazing. I was so surprised when I won the international award.”
The awards ceremony was a celebration of social responsibility, marked by camaraderie and joy. “The celebrations, the hugs, the questions—it was all very supportive. It is wonderful for Momentum to acknowledge our work outside the organisation,” Brandt expressed.
The accolades has not only reinforced his sense of purpose but also renewed his motivation to continue giving back to his community, stating, “Our communities need us.”
When asked about his sources of motivation, Brandt replied, “It is the smile on the members’ faces when they receive that plot. The gratitude is there, and to help people warms my heart.”
