As the festive season draws near, bringing friends, families, and communities together in celebration, the Drinks Federation of South Africa (DF-SA) commends the majority of consumers who enjoy alcohol responsibly and the numerous traders who uphold best practices in responsible trading. This season presents an opportunity to reinforce the importance of shared responsibility in creating safe and enjoyable celebrations for all.
CEO of DF-SA, Angela Russell, shared an encouraging message: "Most South Africans celebrate responsibly, understanding and appreciating the role that alcohol plays in social occasions. As we approach the festive season, we call on alcohol traders to fulfil their obligations to the law, their communities, and the broader industry. Responsible trading protects lives, builds trust, and ensures a thriving, sustainable market for everyone."
DF-SA also called on alcohol traders to embrace their role as key partners in fostering responsible celebrations by committing to the following principles:
No sales to minors. Underage drinking threatens community safety and health. Strict age verification is essential.
Adhering to legislated trading hours. Selling alcohol only during permitted hours helps keep our communities safe and well-regulated.
Avoiding counterfeit and illicit alcohol. Ensuring that all alcohol sold is legitimate protects consumers and preserves the integrity of the industry.
No service to visibly intoxicated patrons. This critical practice helps prevent potential harm and demonstrates a commitment to responsible trading.
"Traders have a key role to play by refusing service to patrons who are visibly intoxicated. It’s a decision that aligns with legal requirements and demonstrates genuine care for community safety," adds Russell. "Similarly, we urge consumers to plan ahead for safe transportation and not to drink and drive. Celebrations are meant to be joyful, and making these responsible choices ensures that everyone can enjoy a festive season free from harm,” said Russell.
DF-SA also reminded traders with special event licenses to implement effective controls and promote responsible consumption messaging as per the Alcohol Communications Code of Conduct.
"By adhering to these principles, traders contribute to a safer, more enjoyable festive season for everyone," Russell concludes. "Together, we can ensure that good times remain safe times, protecting lives and sustaining livelihoods."
