Cape Town - Job-seekers in Khayelitsha and potential employers will be brought together under one roof when Labour Minister Mildred Oliphant leads a Jobs Fair initiative.

Friday’s fair at Khayelitsha Stadium is in response to the recent Presidential Jobs Summit led by President Cyril Ramaphosa. The two-day inaugural Jobs Summit was convened by the National Economic Development and Labour Council (Nedlac).

Labour Department spokesperson Teboho Thejane said: “The Jobs Fair, spearheaded by the Public Employment Services (PES) branch of the Department of Labour, is aimed at giving work-seekers an opportunity to meet with potential employers who can assist with their placement in different forms of employment, including learnerships, internships or job opportunities.”

People who need assistance have been requested to bring their identity documents or cards. Work-seekers will be provided with career guidance and shown how to apply for jobs and prepare for job interviews.

“Other government departments, learning institutions, trade unions, private employers, the Independent Electoral Commission, the Department of Home Affairs as well as entities such as the Unemployment Insurance Fund and the Compensation Fund are expected to grace the Jobs Fair,” said Thejane.

The Jobs Fair initiative is one of a basket of interventions by the department to alleviate the crisis of unemployment, especially among South African youth. It was launched by Mildred Oliphant in 2012.

Through the initiative, the Department of Labour, using the Public Employment Services branch, seeks to build a comprehensive database of work-seekers across all work disciplines for free use and/or placement by potential employers. The event takes place at the Khayelitsha Stadium in Pama Road.
