Johannesburg - William Nicol Drive is set to be renamed after struggle icon Winnie Madikizela-Mandela, Gauteng Transport MEC Ismail Vadi said on Tuesday.

This comes after the City of Joburg passed a resolution to rename the road after the late struggle stalwart.

Madikizela-Mandela was also posthumously honoured with the freedom of the City of Joburg

William Nicol is among the eight to 10 roads set to be renamed across the province, Vadi revealed in an interview with Jacaranda FM.

"Historically, some of the major freeways and routes have been renamed after heroes of the apartheid era. Some of them were governors of the provinces or major politicians.

"We think the time has come for us to review this quite carefully and see if we can't name or rename some of our major arterial roads in honour of people who've made a profound and major contribution to the struggle for freedom."

Other roads include the Old Vereeniging road (R82) which will be named after Duma Nokwe, a major figure in the liberation history, as well as the N14 and N12.

"The time has come for us to honour some of our heroes and heroines," Vadi said.
