To expand digital access for young people and equip them with ICT skills, the Department of Communications and Digital Technologies (DCDT), in partnership with the State Information Technology Agency (SITA) has opened a new cyber lab at Meyerton High School in Midvaal.
“The cyber lab is more than just a computer lab, it is a dedicated space for digital skills training in robotics, coding, and digital literacy, ensuring learners gain the competencies needed to succeed in ICT, engineering, and data sciences,
“It is a practical and meaningful deliverable to connect young South Africans and empower them with the digital skills. By expanding connectivity and access to technology in schools, the DCDT is ensuring that no learner is left behind in South Africa’s digital transformation,” added the DCDT.
“By equipping students with critical ICT skills, the initiative directly contributes to bridging the digital divide and creating pathways to economic participation in a fast-evolving digital economy,” said the DCDT in a statement.
“Bridging the digital divide, one school at a time!” said the department's Minister Solly Malatsi, in a post on social media platform, X.
According to the department, Meyerton High School is a quintile one school. It serves Sicelo, Randvaal and Riversdale communities, which have a history of limited access to technology and reliable internet.
The new cyber lab has been equipped with 40 laptops, interactive smart boards, and 24 months of internet connectivity.
The DCDT states that the technology ministry continues to prioritise digital inclusion and literacy, and this Cyberlab is a tangible step towards achieving that vision.
