Bail has been denied for a 29-year-old man accused of beating his stepson to death for wetting the bed. Jeremy Bosman appeared in the De Aar District Court where the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) was able to successfully have bail opposed.

"Bosman faces serious charges of murder in connection with the tragic death of his three-year-old stepson, Charvandre Kieran Everson, along with charges of assault with the intent to cause grievous bodily harm (GBH) against the child’s mother, 29-year-old Charmelle Thys," said NPA spokesperson in the Northern Cape, Mojalefa Senokoatsane.

He said on October 19, when Charvandre wet the bed, Bosman allegedly struck the child repeatedly on the head with his hands and a broom. The NPA said Bosman further allegedly slammed the child’s head against a wall, leading to severe injuries.

Witness testimonies and preliminary investigations suggest that the injuries left Charvandre unable to eat or even open his mouth.

It is further alleged that the child wet the bed a second time and he was assaulted again.

"There was blood in the child's mouth and he lost control of his bodily functions. He was unable to move his legs and was weak," the NPA said.

Before Thys took her son to the De Aar New Hospital, Bosman allegedly told her not to disclose details of the incidents. Unfortunately, upon arrival, medical personnel confirmed that Charvandre had already succumbed to his injuries," Senokoatsane said.

When medical staff examined the boy's body, they found multiple bruises on the little boy's body, prompting them to notify police.

Senokoatsane said following a thorough investigation, police charged Bosman with murder and assault with GBH. Bosman appeared in court to officially apply for bail.

"The prosecution opposed bail under Schedule 6, citing the severe nature of the charges and the risk posed by the accused to vulnerable individuals, particularly children. The court agreed, remanding Bosman in custody until his next court appearance on December 5," he said.
