New Mahindra Thar Roxx is a Jimny fighter that won’t come to SA, for now at least

Mahindra has unveiled its new Thar Roxx in India, and it looks every bit like a baby Jeep Wrangler that’s rearing to take on Suzuki’s popular Jimny.

However, the new five-door Thar is not on the radar for South Africa any time soon as the carmaker will initially focus on satisfying the overwhelming demand for this vehicle in its home market before any exports can commence, IOL’s local contact at Mahindra said.

The Thar Roxx is built on the company’s brand new M-Glyde platform, which promises “class leading” dynamics both on and off the road, the company claims.

For the Indian market Mahindra offers a choice of two engines: the latest 2.2-litre mHawk turbodiesel that pushes 128kW and 370Nm, and a new 2.0-litre turbopetrol that’s rated at 130kW and 380Nm.

Both engines can be paired with either a six-speed manual or six-speed automatic gearbox, and the Roxx also features Mahindra’s 4Xplor four-wheel drive system with electronic locking differentials as well as Crawl Smart Assist for low-speed driving and an IntelliTurn feature that enhances manoeuvrability.

The company is also promising best-in-class approach, departure and breakover angles as well as a 650mm wading depth.

The cabin is a far cry from earlier Thar models, with the cabin featuring 26cm twin screens and higher-end models boast features such as a nine-speaker Harman Kardon sound system, 360-degree surround view system, ventilated seats and an expansive panoramic sunroof.

“Thar Roxx represents a new era of refined body-on-frame SUVs, built on our all-new M_Glyde platform. This cutting-edge platform, enables us to deliver the best of both worlds - blending refined urban sophistication typically found in monocoque SUVs like the XUV700 with unparalleled, tech-enabled off-road capabilities.”
