Durban - Demonstrating that tenacity is not just a human trait, a bull that was stuck in a deep open grave was able to climb out of it after getting some help from staff from the Garden Route SPCA, which covers the George and Mossel Bay areas.

In a Facebook post detailing the rescue operation, the SPCA said it received a call that no one ever wants to get about a cow which had fallen into a grave and could not get out.

“What do you do when you don't always have the right equipment at hand? You come up with a master plan. They say team work makes the dream work. This grave may not look as deep as two metres down in the photos but believe me it’s deep. As we stood around making plans it tried a couple of times to jump out,” said the SPCA.

SPCA said its members were surprised to see how high the bull could actually jump.

“Putting our heads together, we asked around for some shovels, and we immediately started to throw back some of the sand and stones and we made a small step to help him get out,” it said.

The SPCA said they did not attempt to pull the bull out by the horns for safety reasons.

“In cases like these you have to think of your own safety as well. We realised that should he get out and turn on us we might end up in the grave with severe injuries.”

The SPCA recalled a similar incident in which once the bull had got out, he chased the inspectors.

“We are happy to report he is out safely and no one got hurt. Now this sweet boy can continue grazing after he was [taken] to a safer area,” said the SPCA.
