Durban: The eThekwini Municipality says it has procured food vouchers for needy senior citizens which will be distributed by ward councillors.

The City said that the food vouchers will be provided to the elderly as a gesture of honouring them and ensuring that they also enjoy this special time of year.

Municipality Speaker Thabani Nyawose said ward councillors will select senior citizens within their communities based on their needs.

“We will allocate food vouchers to each ward councillor for all 111 wards.”

“We understand that the food vouchers cannot reach every senior citizen in the ward, hence our priority is to assist those who are most vulnerable. Senior citizens who receive the food vouchers will be able to use them at food outlets of their choice,” added Nyawose.

Nyawose said that senior citizens are a valuable fountain of knowledge and wisdom that the community can rely on to guide younger generations.

“As a caring City, the municipality is committed to ensuring that elderly people have something to enjoy, particularly during the Christmas month.”
