Durban: Residents of Chatsworth will be holding a protest march on Saturday to call for law enforcement to act after motorists became victims of robberies on Higginson Highway. The protest is being led by community group Silvermount Civics, which said that boulders were being placed on the Highway, which leads to motorists crashing their vehicles and subsequently becoming victims of robberies.
Desmond Kylas from Silvermount Civics said that as recently as last week, there had been incidents where people had crashes after boulders and other obstacles were placed on Higginson Highway between Westcliff and the Moorton turn-off.
“One of the reasons that prompted this protest was a mother from Chatsworth who approached us and told us her son was involved in an incident like this. The vehicle came to a standstill, he was assaulted, his possessions were taken, and some of the stuff from the vehicle was stolen.”
Kylas added that residents are concerned as this is a daily route and more motorists may travel at night due to it being the festive season.
“We felt it was necessary to bring more awareness to this issue, and this protest march is a proactive stance to call for a stop to these attacks on motorists.”
He said the peaceful march will start at the RK Khan Circle by Shallcross Link Road and will go to the Metro Police office.
