The State of the Nation Address (SONA) has arrived and it’s not just the ladies dazzling in traditional wear and emerald greens – the gents are definitely stepping up their style game too.
From vibrant hues to bold patterns, the red carpet is embracing every colour of the rainbow, reflecting the spirit of South Africa itself.
One person who never fails to make a statement? Papa Penny. For those not in the know, Papa Penny (real name Eric Kulani Giyani Nkovani) is a legendary Tsonga disco musician, reality TV star, and former politician. Known for his flamboyant style, he consistently brings a mix of colour, bling, and cultural pride wherever he goes.
At SONA 2025, Papa Penny, who is also a MK Party MP, made sure to make a statement, rocking bold gold shoes.made sure all eyes were on him in a blue and gold suit, paired with gold shoes – a rare but unmistakably signature look.
And yes, the bling was out in full force, with his gold chains making sure the spotlight stayed firmly on him.
Of course, no Papa Penny look would be complete without his signature “bolla” hairstyle, a ponytail that has become an iconic part of his brand over the years.
Meanwhile, Kenny Kunene, known for his love of luxury brands did not disappoint when it came to his SONA outfit, wearing Versace Medusa loafers that retail for R21 700.
At least they matched his outfit. Attendees have to put thought into their SONA outfits, even the shoes, it's the little details that matter. Like cracked heels exposed by sandals and comfort is important, which is possible why attendees are rocking kitten heels.
No one wants to see an MP walking barefoot thanks to uncomfortable shoes. Bold choices are also being made with lots of colour from red Puma sneakers to yellow pointy shoes, people are stepping on the red carpet.
As always, heritage and traditional wear take centre stage at the SONA, and 2025 was no exception. Traditional garments were truly shining, with both menswear and womenswear embracing bold, vibrant prints that pay tribute to South Africa's rich cultural diversity.
Each design told its own unique story, making it a chic celebration of what makes this country so special.
One look came from Inkosi Mwelo Nonkonyana, a prominent South African traditional leader, politician, and sports administrator.
Nonkonyana stepped onto the 2025 SONA red carpet in a striking cream garment adorned with colourful traditional prints, paired with intricate beading and a traditional staff – an essential accessory worn by many leaders during ceremonial occasions.
The traditional staff is a symbol of wisdom, authority, and deep-rooted cultural significance, making it the perfect finishing touch to this powerful ensemble.
By wearing this attire, Nonkonyana is not only celebrating his Eastern Cape heritage but he’s also sending a clear message about the importance of cultural pride and identity.
In a space traditionally dominated by Western formal wear, he’s making a bold statement that South Africa’s cultural traditions still have a strong presence on the SONA red carpet. It’s a stylish way to remind us all of the beauty and significance of South African heritage.
