Durban - Let’s take this outside. After all, that’s pretty much the motto for décor next year as patios, porches and pool sides all call for a much needed make-over when in-door/outdoor living gurus cast a closer look at what’s on the outside.
You might as well get started now as we head into the summer months with the warmer weather calling for a backyard overhaul.
Lee Reichman, Coricraft merchandising director, says many Durban homes own old cane furniture, solid timber tables, chairs and occasional pieces that can be perked up with an abundance of soft furnishings.
“Opt for soft pastels and muted tones this season. Think beautiful scatter cushions, soft throws and interesting décor pieces.”
She advises opting for fabrics that are mould and mildew resistant.
“Although you cannot put real cane outdoors, this material does perform well in areas that are protected from the elements. Also, be aware that in some instances your cane will weather, but this should be seen as a benefit rather than a pitfall.
“Wooden furniture too, will eventually take on a rustic appearance. It makes for furniture with its own unique look and character.”
Technological advances have made plastic wicker possible – and if it’s all-weather furniture you’re looking for, it’s hardly a problem these days.
Mobelli director Alon Sach says if you want to be on trend, watch out for the resurgence of classic looks.
“These furniture items have wooden tops and wooden elements, but are not made from wood. It’s a natural ‘look’ infused with hi-tech design elements.”
Sach says if it’s a polished look you’re after, opt for scratch-resistant aluminium powder-coated furniture.
“They offer longevity and look good too.”
Steel, particularly retro-look furniture in bright colours, is also popular.
Sach says there is a growing trend towards using outdoor leathers in a myriad different colours.
“White and grey are still very popular, as are brown and taupe.”
He says the line between indoor and outdoor is blurring to the extent that there is no real difference in decorating – your garden furniture can be as trendy as in your living room – it just needs to be more durable.
Popular accessories include illuminating furniture, side tables or pebbles to add ambient light in the evenings, as well as fireplaces and flameless candles. - The Mercury
