Limpopo artists, stand up, it’s your time to shine.
2024 was a successful one for upcoming Limpopo artists who gained popularity.
We have always known of Makhadzi, Master KG and King Monada, who are some of Limpopo's most successful young musicians.
Last year, we learned of vocalist Karishma and Tribby, who were trending on TikTok.
Most people started listening to Lekompo, a unique sound influenced by Limpopo artists after Kharishma’s song “Chokeslam” went viral.
The sound was also influenced by Shebeshxt, one of Limpopo’s artists loved by the Gen Z.
Not only did the song dominate social media during the festive season but it also won Song Of The Year on two radio stations, “Thobela FM” and “Capricorn FM”.
The Song of the Year title holds significant prestige in South Africa. It’s not just about it being the crossover song, but also a big song in terms of listenership and public votes.
“Chokeslam” winning the title twice means that, in 2025, more people will be listening to Lekompo and the genre is expected to grow as one of the best in South Africa.
Local music fanatics expressed their excitement after several popular songs won Song Of The Year in different regions.
“A Lekompo song winning in Limpopo stations, Maskandi winning in KZN station, Sotho Amapiano winning in Free State Station and ‘Biri Marung’ winning in the Urban Station makes sense #SongOfTheYear,” said @Siya___.
Those who have given the sound a chance say it is the Maskandi of Limpopo because, similar to Maskandi singers, Lekompo musicians use their native languages to sing/rap.
Even the beats they use are unique and complement their lyrics and flow.
Since the current youth has embraced this sound, it wouldn’t be a surprise if Lekompo spreads worldwide like Amapiano.
“Lekompo is not just a genre, nor is it just an alternative youth movement- it is a social commentary on the lived experiences of rural youth,” said @nino_senong.
Meanwhile, Mthandeni’s song “Gucci”, featuring Mahwoo won Song Of The Year on Ukhozi FM, the biggest radio station in Mzansi.
