Today marked the opening of the China to Cape Book Fair at the Good Hope Library at The Castle of Good Hope in Cape Town.
In attendance was Viasen Soobramoney, Chairperson of the Editorial Board, Independent Media, who welcomed special guests.
“I see first-hand how knowledge and the written word can shape public discourse, encourage dialogue and ultimately build bridges between communities.
“Today’s exhibition reinforces that very notion. It provides an opportunity for us to explore the profound ideas embedded in the literary works from two nations with such distinctive yet complementary histories,” Soobramoney said.
“Beyond the exhibition, we are witnessing a signing of a historic memorandum of understanding (MoU) between Loot.co.za and the China International Book Trading Corporation.
“This MoU represents more than a simple agreement. It signifies a deep commitment to us strengthening our shared values of education, cultural enrichment and access to knowledge.”
He said that he would like to commend the donation of books to the National Library of South Africa, as a “gesture that optimises the importance of extending knowledge with the broader public”.
“This act of generosity ensures that literature continues to be a tool for education, empowerment and the preservation of our diverse cultural heritage.”
Deputy Consul General, Mr Chang’An Tang, Consulate General of China in Cape Town said: “Today we are donating books from China to South Africa which will facilitate partnership and further promote cultural exchange. These books showcase the unique charm of China’s contemporary economic progress and culture and offer South African readers the opportunity to understand Chinese politics, economy, and culture.”
“Books are the beacon of wisdom, messages of culture and a bridge to the soul,” said Mr Jia Qingpeng, chairperson of Qingdao Publishing Group.
“Through this collaboration, we would like to showcase local and international waters, foster a love for reading amongst people of all ages, provide a platform for writers to share their work, and promote cultural exchange and understanding.
“Together we will create a vibrant and exclusive literary experience that benefits our communities and inspires a love of reading,” Loot.co.za CEO, Shakeerah Diedericks, said.
Books were selected from 12 publishing houses in China and Loot.co.za best sellers. All the books at the exhibition are now available on Loot.co.za. Admission is free and open to the public from September 6 to 8.
