Durban — A suspect who allegedly stole Christmas lights from a hotel in uMhlanga and threw them away while being pursued by a private security company was finally apprehended.
Marshall Security managing director Tyron Powell said that in the early hours of Saturday morning, a Marshall Security officer noticed a suspect removing Christmas lights from a popular hotel in lower uMhlanga. When approached, the suspect fled the scene, entering a white Chevrolet and speeding off towards the M4 highway.
“Acting swiftly, Marshall Security teams initiated a coordinated pursuit, successfully intercepting the suspect’s vehicle on the M4. The suspect, who initially denied the theft; however, surveillance footage clearly showed the individual removing the lights. Following further questioning, the suspect admitted to discarding the stolen items during the chase,” Powell said.
“Marshall Security officers retraced the route and recovered the Christmas lights, ensuring they were safely returned.”
Powell said the incident was escalated to the SAPS, and the suspect was handed over to Durban North SAPS.
“This operation highlights the effectiveness of rapid response, teamwork, and vigilance in protecting the community during the festive season,” Powell stated.
“As the holidays approach, Marshall Security urges residents to remain alert and report suspicious activity promptly. Together, we can create a safer environment for all.”
KwaZulu-Natal police stated that they do not yet have a record of such an incident at the Durban North police station.
Meanwhile, around this time last year, after 20 years of putting up Christmas lights and watching the smiles on the community’s faces, Annie’s Busy Beez, a baby care and preschool, was shocked to learn that some of their Christmas lights were stolen.
Four of the lights were stolen - three Santa lights: a big one which is about 1m high, another playing a guitar and the third one is white and red. The fourth light was a reindeer.
It was the first time any of the lights were stolen.
