Cape Town - A former security guard hopes to further his grassroots activism in his campaign as an Independent candidate for ward 110 and represent the communities of Lavender Hill, Steenberg, Grassy Park and Retreat.
Aubrey Robinson from Cafda Village wants to better the community and assist other residents,
Robinson said his community work started in 2002 after joining the Cafda Residents’ Association and witnessing the many promises left unfulfilled by political parties. This motivated him to stand as an independent candidate and become a worker for the people by assisting as far as possible, whatever the issue might be.
Robinson said more shelters for the homeless were needed, more accessible recreational facilities for the communities, a safety and security plan, updated infrastructure and a sustainable solution to the massive dumping problem in Cafda Village.
“These issues will collectively be addressed with residents and all other stakeholders. My vision is to see genuine changes whereby every resident will benefit, not only a certain section of the ward,” said Robinson.
If elected Robinson said he would ensure the elderly and the youth from the communities in Ward 110 benefit from various groups and activities for their betterment such as art programmes and education initiatives by contributing 20% of his monthly salary.
Lavender Hill resident Donovan Klein said, “I have been in contact with Robinson for a few years now, especially on Facebook sharing and requesting assistance or advice. He is a very passionate, open and hard-working individual who will definitely be an asset to the community he strives to improve.”
Steenberg resident Bradley Richards has known Robinson for the past five years and said he had been very active in the community over the years by collecting clothes for people in disadvantaged areas, addressing the dumping problem in Steenberg and helping people with their rates and repair work.
“I’m visible, always available when needed to listen and hands-on amongst our people. I plan to set up WhatsApp groups in sections for service delivery issues to be addressed promptly,” said Robinson.
