Cape Town - DA Ward 72 councillor Kevin Southgate wants to continue the work that he has been doing in his ward for the last seven years.
Southgate joined the City Council in January 2015. Ward 72 covers Southfield, Heathfield, Punts Estate, Elfindale, Retreat, Allenby Estate and a portion of Steenberg.
From interactions with residents, Southgate said some of the main challenges existing within the ward is the need to further increase levels of preventative maintenance to roads, electricity, stormwater drains, sewerage and waterways.
“Other issues relate to the maintenance of parks and public open spaces, crime, illegal dumping, traffic calming and congestion,” said Southgate. He said some issues were easier to address than others.
“Those that require capital investment have been more challenging because you have to engage with the relevant departments and agitate for budget. The real struggle is to deal with those challenges that require community behavioural change such as crime, speeding and illegal dumping.”
Should he be re-elected, Southgate said he would focus on the issues highlighted by residents, by ensuring investment in the upgrade and maintenance of infrastructure as well as the upgrade of parks, sports facilities and waterbodies.
“I will also ensure the delivery of basic services and continue with the empowering of accredited neighbourhood watches and the installation of CCTV,” said Southgate.
On why the public should vote for him, Southgate said: “I have a track record of community service spanning 30 years, during which time I have held various leadership positions within different structures.
“Since I’ve been in public office, I am familiar with the processes within the City regarding the importance of the Integrated Development Plan and budget and how to access funding for projects. I have also developed strong community networks and built relationships with departments which are confirmed by the many successful projects achieved to date.”
Southfield Neighbourhood Watch chairperson Gregori Bezuidenhoudt said that as a ward councillor, Southgate was accessible and hands-on.
“He is available on a variety of community WhatsApp groups and is always willing to assist with City-related matters. On one occasion he got on his knees in the dirt, assisting a resident with a blocked water pipe. Urgent matters are escalated immediately to the correct municipal office for attendance and followed up until the matter is resolved.”
